Showgirls, Provincetown is playing at the Palms Springs International Film Festival. Over the course of the summer of 2007 director, C.Fitz documented the legendary Provincetown stage production of “Showgirls,” and the stories of the people involved. Her camera crews descended upon the tiny idyllic fishing village located on the tip of Cape Cod that is the backdrop for “Showgirls.” Every Monday evening musical performers, comedians, performance artists, drag queens, dog acts, and those who could only be described as, talent challenged, emphatically conducted their acts with the goal of the $500.00 prize at the end of the night. C.Fitz taps the Host of “ShowGirls,” Ryan Landry as the guide throughout the film to not only introduce the show on stage, but also the viewer to the town and performers offstage and backstage. Through their performances and interviews we are introduced to a group of misfits who are regulars in “Showgirls” whom Ryan has labeled “The Gold Dust Orphans.” These unique and creative individuals share their stories and why they keep performing week after week. A sampling of these characters are: “Deborah Downer,” “Della Cattesen,” and “Steamy Brown.” Such nationally known acts as Randy Roberts and Varla Jean Merman also grace the “Showgirls” stage. They both give their perspective in the film on the importance of playing “Showgirls” to make it in Provincetown. The film makes you fall in love with not only these characters but also their passion for the stage. Visit the Showgirls Myspace page for more info :
