Jon Arterton, conductor of Provincetown’s Outer Cape Chorale, is hoping to win a chance to record with Yo-Yo Ma. A few days ago he read something about Indabamusic, an organization that helps musicians from around the world collaborate via the internet. They were having a contest, and the winner gets to make a recording with Yo-Yo Ma. Everyone was given an audio recording of Yo-Yo Ma playing “Dona Nobis Pacem” on his cello, and contestants were given the chance to record an accompaniment for it. Arterton got out his Echoplex – an electronic looping device – and began creating his entry. He sang a musical phrase to accompany the cello part, and then began to add various layers over it. In this case, he created twelve different vocal layers that he added to Yo-Yo Ma’s playing, one by one. You can hear the result at
www.indabamusic.com. If you like it, you can even vote for him and help send a local musician off to record with Yo-Yo Ma!!!
