Blessing of Provincetown's Performers - UU Meeting House
The Unitarian Universalist Meeting House is hosting Provincetown’s first “Blessing of the Performers” on Monday, June 29th at 7:30 pm. Rev. Alison Hyder, who is conducting this event, says that she appreciates the annual Blessing of the Fleet and the Pet walk and Blessing of the Animals. But Provincetown has one asset that few other towns can boast: a diverse summer community of musicians, actors, singers and drag performers. “These people give Provincetown much of its character and appeal for the many tourists who come here every season. Without them, we would be more parochial and a lot more insular. They bring a continuous stream of creativity to land’s end, making us the center of gay life. Many of them are part of the community and contribute to local causes. And besides,” she adds, “many of them have become my friends.” The UU Meeting House is a performance venue where performers such as James Lecesne, Holly Near, and Ellen Greene have appeared, and Dina Martina made her Provincetown debut. The Sanctuary, with its perfect acoustics, houses a Steinway concert grand piano. It’s the home of the Great Music on Sundays @ 5 pm concert series, where singers like Jon Arterton, Adam Berry – and Rev. Hyder – perform Broadway tunes under the organization of composer John Thomas. The Blessing will include music from Billy Hough, Scarbie, and Steven Fales. “But this is more than a concert,” states Rev. Hyder. “This will be a ritual that honors all the local performs and asks blessings for a successful and happy summer season.” Although the Blessing is oriented for the performers and their crew, everyone is welcome to attend and add their hopes and gratitude to the performers. Rev. Hyder hopes that this will be the first of an annual event. The Meeting House is wheelchair accessible. All are invited.
