Provincetown Art Association and Museum Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School Early Summer Workshops

Provincetown, MA: The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) kicks off the season with workshops from four dynamic artist-teachers: Megan Hinton, newcomer Leah Lopez, Tia Scalcione and Bert Yarborough.

Fresh from two major exhibitions this spring, Megan Hinton will teach Abstract Representational Painting. She’s participated in Beyond Surface, a three person exhibition at PAAM and a solo exhibition, entitled Overlooks, at The Cape Cod Museum of Art, which features her contemporary landscape paintings.

She writes, “I teach to not only share my knowledge of art, but to act as a catalyst and guide for students of painting and drawing. My students, who come from diverse backgrounds and levels, teach me about the many possibilities and approaches to art-making. Having to communicate an artistic discourse in regard to technical demonstrations, the language of art, and the significance of work by other artists not only makes my own approach to art making more clear, but gives me a better understanding of how students can expand upon and grow as individuals from their work.”

Abstract Representational Painting will take place in Hinton’s Wellfleet studio, as part of our Artists in their Studios program. These workshops provide a unique and supportive experience across Cape Cod. Of her class, one student wrote “Megan is an excellent teacher. I would definitely recommend her. She is able to put ideas and concepts into an understandable format either in words or by demonstration or both.”

A summer regular, Bert Yarborough returns to PAAM to share his joy of teaching. He currently teaches at Colby-Sawyer College as well as at the Mass College of Art Low Residency Graduate program and has taught at Harvard University, the South Shore Arts Center, and Plymouth State College. This summer he’ll teach Mixed Media Drawing from the Figure at the beginning of June.

Yarborough introduces students to new and different media for them to explore while also encouraging them to continue in the practice in which they currently work. Like this workshop, Yarborough explores a variety of media in his own work, including drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media. He is represented locally at artSTRAND and his work has been reviewed in Artscope, Art New England, and Provincetown Arts, amongst others.

PAAM is excited to welcome new faculty member Leah Lopez to the summer lineup. Lopez is a nationally recognized, award winning artist who has participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions. Widely recognized as a young emerging artist Lopez teaches at the esteemed New York Academy of Art and conducts workshops around the country. Of her work, Lopez says, “When I see beauty in even the simplest forms, I’m inspired to paint the essence of that beauty, my work reflects what I see”.

Raised in the unique culture of Northern New Mexico, artists and artisans captured Leah’s imagination and inspired her to explore creative outlets. Her innate love for drawing and painting was a continual source of inspiration and led her to practice traditional techniques through a series of art classes in California and later to attend art classes at the University of New Mexico. Leah has won several awards and accommodations, such as honorable mention at the Salon International. Most recently, she was awarded first place at the National Association of Women Artists exhibition and an award of merit at the American Women Artists exhibition.

She has taught at the Rockport Art Association, Rockport, MA; Hudson River Valley Art Workshops, Greenville, NY; New York Academy of Art, New York, NY; Lyme Art Association, Old Lyme, CT; University of New Mexico, Los Alamos, NM; and elsewhere, from which she has a devoted following of students. Of one of her classes, a student said “It’s Captivating! Eloquent! Compelling!”

Lopez will teach Paintings of Nature, Nautical, and Novelties, a weekend workshop created for PAAM, based on the inspiration she takes from Provincetown.

“Things always change, the arrangement, the model, the light, the appearance of color, and this offers infinite variations for study.” She adds, “It brings me great satisfaction that this beautiful journey doesn’t have a destination and the challenges are endless.”

If you don’t feel ready for one of these workshops, why not check out an Introduction to Art-Making with Tia Scalcione? This workshop covers a number of media, allowing students to get comfortable with multiple media in a short amount of time.

This class is designed for the individual who does not have a background in art but has always longed to learn how to make works of their own. Each session is devoted to a different subject: drawing from the model, working from the landscape or still lifes, and investigating printmaking.

We’ve had a number of students take an introductory workshop in the beginning of the summer so they feel prepared or less nervous about taking another workshop later in the summer. This is a great way to get back into the studio and freshen up or increase your artistic skills in a nurturing, open environment. Scalcione is a kind teacher, a great listener and is creative in her variety of approaches.

Scalcione received her BFA from Boston University, School of Fine Arts with a disciplinary focus in painting and education. She has worked in a variety of arts education settings. For the past nine years she has taught printmaking, painting and drawing on outer Cape Cod.

We’re proud to present a full roster of workshops running from the beginning of June through September. June is a great time to take a class as it’s not yet full-blown summer. Easy parking and cooler weather is always conducive for an art class!

The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at PAAM is committed to year-round programming, taking advantage of the talented artist-teachers who live here and students who are excited to learn from them.

We look forward to seeing you this summer at PAAM!
