Art Reach Program Exhibition at PAAM

Provincetown, MA: “The thing that I created here is my future. I have figured out how to go through life and have confidence to follow my passions. I am my own person. ” This is what Jared King has said about his experience in Art Reach, the twenty-eight-week afternoon program at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). Jared is in his third year of Art Reach; while juggling a full semester of Cape Cod Community College courses and a part time job, he attends the program three afternoons a week, and is currently developing painting, printmaking and music projects with teaching artists Tracey Anderson, Liz Carney and Curator of Education Lynn Stanley.

“Without PAAM, I wouldn’t be who I am today nor would I have created any of the art I have, or gained the knowledge I now possess due to Art Reach!” Kaitlyn “Kewi” Russell

Kewi, also in her third year of the program, will graduate from Provincetown High School this June. To support her application process and rigorous portfolio reviews, Kewi utilized a selection of works of art that were created in Art Reach. She has been accepted to a number of colleges, including the Maine College of Art and Montserrat College of Art and is now faced with the happy problem of deciding where she’ll attend school this fall.

Kewi and Jared’s artwork, along with the work of Etel Amato, Nataya Bostwick, Trevan Brodie, Kaitlin Burns, Alisha Fabia, Chris Martinez, and Crystal Swensen will be featured in the end-of-semester Art Reach exhibition in PAAM’s galleries. A range of work, including figurative drawing and painting, music composition, comic books and graphic novels, poetry, photography, printmaking, and mixed-media sculpture by the students will be on display.

The Art Reach program is a FREE eight-month immersion program at PAAM which meets three afternoons each week, October-May, and provides substantive out-of-school arts and humanities opportunities, in partnership with the Provincetown School System, Nauset Regional High School, and the Provincetown Police Department. Art Reach is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Kelley Foundation, Bank of America, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Peter Petas and Ted Jones, the Aeroflex Foundation, the Bessie Pappas Charitable Foundation, the Kelley Foundation, the Hess and Helen Kline Foundation, Frank Vasello of Relish, Mary DeAngelis, an anonymous donor, and the National Endowment for the Arts-which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

The public is warmly invited to a complimentary opening reception on Friday, May 13 from 7-9PM. This exhibition will be on view May 6-22, 2011.

Bill Barrell Exhibition at PAAM

May 27-July 10

Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) presents the exhibition “Bill Barrell: Full Circle”, with a survey featuring works created over Barrell’s more than fifty-year career in the town where his creative life took root.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Bill Barrell: Full Circle

Provincetown, MA: The artist Bill Barrell came of age artistically in the 1950s, inspired by the nascent figurative expressionist movement, and the heady atmosphere of Hans Hofmann’s Provincetown School of Fine Art. Born in London, England in 1932, Barrell emigrated to the US in 1954 and after a summer visit to Provincetown in 1956, took up residence in the town the following year. While unable to afford the Hofmann school’s tuition, he took advantage of the renowned teacher’s open critiques and became close friends with Hofmann students Bob Beauchamp, Red Grooms, and Bob Thompson.

This summer at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), from May 27 to July 10, the artist’s work will be celebrated in the place where his creative life took root, in an exhibition fittingly titled Bill Barrell: Full Circle.

The exhibition at PAAM will present work created over Barrell’s more than fifty-year career. Curator Robert Henry says of the artist and his work, “Bill Barrell is a Modernist. The physicality of painting and of paint, and its application is at the core of his work. More recently a kind of post-modern attitude has arisen. Quite a few of the paintings in the exhibition are clearly tributes to modern masters such as Gorky, Picasso, Matisse, and Guston. They are Barrell’s interpretation of the history of Modernism.”

Beginnings: Barrell had his first show at the Sun Gallery in Provincetown in 1959. The now legendary gallery was founded in 1955 by artists Dominic Falcone and Yvonne Anderson and became a lightning rod for experimental, contemporary work, including a new type of art performance or “Happening.” In 1960 Barrell took over the Sun to continue the tradition of showing figurative expressionist work by such artists as Bob Beauchamp, Bob Thompson, Tony Vevers and Red Grooms. Grooms had his first Happening, A Play Called Fire, at the Sun Gallery in 1958 and Claes Oldenburg’s first show was also at The Sun.

Working Together: In 1960,Barrell’s decision to direct the Sun Gallery marked the beginning of a long career of working to establish and support artist-run organizations. In 1964 he became a member of Rhino Horn, a group the artist Tony Vevers states was “like the Sun-the group espoused a figurative, socially aware position that was expressed in a vigorous, rough, expressionistic painterly style.” In the mid-sixties Barrell went on to co-found the St. Marks Place Gallery with fellow artists, and in the 1970s he was one of ten artists to establish the Organization of Independent Artists (OIA), which supported the exhibition of artists’ work in public buildings. The efforts of the OIA resulted in the display of artists’ work in major court houses and administration buildings in NYC and Washington DC.

By the 80s Barrell had set up a studio in Jersey City, NJ, in an old tobacco factory at 111 First Street, which became a home for over 120 artists. Later, together with others, Bill Barrell helped to establish ProArts, an organization that assisted artists in finding work and exhibition space. As well as a home and studio space for artists, 111 First Street featured 8000 square feet of exhibition space; many of the exhibitions over the space’s twenty-year history were reviewed by the NY Times.

The Art of Synthesis: The New York Times critic William Zimmer states, “[Barrell's] aesthetic might be a continuation in rough American guise of the calm luxuriousness and voluptuousness associated with Matisse. His influence is strong in Mr. Barrell’s paintings, as is Picasso’s. One of Mr. Barrell’s feats is to have harmoniously married the two rivals.”

Barrell describes it this way: “I have been pulled in many directions but always realize that deep down I have to investigate all the nooks and crannies of various approaches to arrive at that magical moment when they are pulled together into one new experience.”

The energy of that “new experience” will be on view in Full Circle, at PAAM.

The public is warmly invited to a free opening reception on Friday, May 27 from 8-10PM, as well as a free public lecture with the artist on Tuesday, June 7 at 7PM as part of the Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture Series. This exhibition runs from May 27-July 10, 2011.

Provincetown, MA: Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is pleased to present the exhibition John Grillo: Abstract Expressionism, The Formative Years (1946-48). John Grillo played a seminal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism in the San Francisco bay area and is acknowledged as “perhaps the first and purest action painter on the west coast.” (Thomas Albright Art in The San Francisco Bay Area 1945-1980).

In 1946 Grillo enrolled in the San Francisco School of Fine Arts under the G.I. Bill; when funds and art supplies were short, he experimented with whatever was on hand, including coffee grounds and cocoa. But as the art historian and curator Susan Landauer describes, “he reserved his most radical experimentation for the medium of watercolor. For sheer inventiveness of technique [his watercolors] rivaled vanguard developments in the East, and in their spontaneity and dramatic intensity, many of these paintings bear the hallmarks of classic Abstract Expressionism.”

Remarkably, Grillo’s gestural work predates or parallels the development of action paintings by celebrated abstract expressionists Franz Kline, William De Kooning and Jackson Pollack. The exhibition at PAAM will feature over thirty of Grillo’s groundbreaking watercolors.

PAAM invites the public to a free opening reception on Friday, June 24 from 8-10PM. This exhibition runs from June 24-August 14, 2011. PAAM will also offer a free public lecture with the artist on Tuesday, June 28 at 7PM as part of the Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture Series.

Ary Stillman Exhibition at PAAM
June 17-August 28

Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) proudly presents a survey of work by artist Ary Stillman. Deeply influenced by breakthroughs in psychology in the early 20th Century, Stillman’s work reflects his search for the collective unconscious. This exhibition will feature a series of prints known as The Priscilla Series, created in his Provincetown studio during the summer of 1948, that explore his unique technique: lines inscribed into paper then rubbed with charcoal to reveal a surface linear structure, instead of embossed grooves.

The public is warmly invited to complimentary reception on Friday, June 24 from 8-10PM.

Ary Stillman: Beneath the Surface

Provincetown, MA: Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is pleased to present a survey of works by Ary Stillman (1891-1967), a Russian American artist whose influences were gathered and dispersed internationally, from Paris to New York, Provincetown to Mexico. While clearly reflective of the zeitgeists of the early 20th century, Stillman’s distinctive approach to classic styles continues to resonate with modern audiences.

Stillman’s earlier work explores the unconscious and his search for an “inner reality.” Deeply influenced by psychiatrist Carl Jung, Stillman sought to access the “collective unconscious”–innate and universal human knowledge–through experimentation with psychic automatation, a technique of removing conscious self-censorship.

Featured in this survery, along with oils painted throughout his sixty-year career, is the Priscilla Series – prints created during the summer of 1948 in a studio on Priscilla Alden Road in Provincetown that show his unique technique: lines inscribed into paper then rubbed with charcoal to reveal a surface linear structure, instead of embossed grooves. With these prints, James Wechsler of the Stillman-Lack Foundation writes, “Stillman began to generate imagery through an entirely different method…he intended to subvert the self-censoring, rational mind in order to gain access to the prehistoric memories stored in the brain’s more primitive regions.”

During his long career as an artist Stillman struggled against convention and code, choosing instead to forge a path that was both deeply personal and universal into the primordial depths of the human mind.

Provincetown, MA: The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is proud to present a full roster of workshops running from the beginning of June through September. In an effort to continue to make our workshops accessible, we’ve kept our prices the same or lowered them. We’re offering one-day, weeklong, evening, and weekend workshops in a variety of media now including photography and lectures and seminars on topics pertinent to artists. Dabble in a new field or return to something familiar!

We welcome new faculty to the summer program including Denny Camino, David Cox, Cedric Egeli, Lois Griffel, Ati Gropius Johansen, Judy Jalbert, Miah Nate Johnson, Michael Jones, Leah Lopez, Jeff Lovinger, Dean Morris, Sophie Parker, Robert K. Roark, Christie Scheele, Gail Sharretts, David Shevlino, and TJ Walton.

As we welcome new faculty, we also recognize the importance of those who continue to teach with us. The tradition of art making in Provincetown had its beginnings more than a century ago and continues today at the Museum School. Heather Bruce, Cedric Egeli, Lois Griffel, and Robert K. Roark are amongst those who studied noted colorist and teacher Henry Hensche who learned from Charles Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art. While Egeli continues to teach, his former student Mary Giammarino also teaches the upcoming artists of today. The legacy of Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann continues with teachers Robert Henry and Selina Trieff. Their teachings inspired Megan Hinton, who now puts her own spin on abstract painting in her classes. From Hawthorne’s school that began here in 1899, we continue the tradition, passing from generation to generation the passion for art.

The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at PAAM is committed to year-round programming, taking advantage of the talented artist-teachers who live here and students who are excited to learn from them.
Please visit www.paam.org for full listings and easy registration. Or give us a call at 508.487.1750. It’s all happening here at PAAM. We hope you’ll join us.

Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture Series

Summer-long lecture series is free to the public

Provincetown, MA: The series was established in 2003 in honor of artist Fredi Schiff Levin, a member of Provincetown’s arts community from the 1960s until her passing in 2002. PAAM gratefully acknowledges John and Toni Levin and Herbert Lee, who make this program possible with their generous support. Fredi Schiff Levin lectures are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

Bill Barrell: Full Circle
Tuesday, June 7, 7pm
A Gallery Talk with the Artist in Conjunction with the Artist’s Exhibition on View at PAAM May 27-July10, 2011

The artist Bill Barrell came of age artistically in the 1950s, inspired by the figurative expressionist movement, and the heady atmosphere of Hans Hofmann’s Provincetown School of Fine Art. Born in London, England in 1932, Barrell emigrated to the US in 1954 and took up residence in Provincetown in 1957. While unable to afford the Hofmann school’s tuition, he attended the renowned teacher’s open critiques and became close friends with Hofmann students Robert Beauchamp, Red Grooms, and Robert Thompson. Since that time Barrell has travelled extensively and called New York City, Jersey City, and most recently, Easton, Pennsylvania home. This summer Barrell’s work will be celebrated in the place where his creative life took root. The exhibition will present work created over Barrell’s more than fifty-year career.

The PAAM Membership is a vibrant community of over 1,800 individuals. Whether you’re an artist or you simply love the arts, a PAAM Membership opens the door to programs and events that enrich and inspire.

Provincetown Art Association and Museum was established in 1914 by a group of artists and townspeople to build a permanent collection of works by artists of outer Cape Cod, and to exhibit art that would allow for unification within the community. Through a comprehensive schedule of exhibitions of local and national significance and educational outreach, Provincetown Art Association and Museum provides the public access to art, artists, and the creative process.

PAAM, located at 460 Commercial Street, is open (October – May) noon to 5pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, also open by appointment; (Memorial Day – September) 11 am – 8pm Monday – Thursday, 11am – 10pm Friday, 11am – 5pm Saturday and Sunday. General admission $7. Free to members and children 12 and under. For more information, please call 508.487.1750 or visit www.paam.org.

Annual Spring Consignment Auction

Provincetown, MA: Since 2004, the auction at PAAM has drawn crowds of national art collectors in search of rare vintage pieces by artists of outer Cape Cod. PAAM Executive Director Chris McCarthy states, “the quality of the auctions has reached a national level both for collectors and consignors. PAAM is the venue for Provincetown art and we are thrilled to not only exhibit this art, but help others build their collections of such an important period in American art history.” PAAM presents live consignment auctions and preview exhibitions twice yearly, and these events have served to present works of art that may not otherwise be seen by the general public.

PAAM’S Fall Consignment Auction in September, 2010 broke records as the highest grossing auction in PAAM history, with over $300,000 in artwork sales. “The freshness of artworks offered for sale by consignors combined with the sophistication of collectors we now attract, create many record-breaking situations,” comments PAAM auctioneer James R. Bakker on this popular event.

The proceeds from PAAM’s auctions directly benefit the Museum’s exhibitions and educational initiatives. Consigners and customers know that the 15% buyer’s premium and the 20% seller’s commission support a solid non-profit institution with a long history of providing programs that serve the public good.

To accession important works into the permanent collection, PAAM depends on the generosity of its supporters. Consignors would often love to contribute a fine work to the collection, but may not be in the financial position to do so. Yet they know that, by offering the work for auction at PAAM, they give the organization the opportunity to search out a potential donor who may wish to contribute the piece back to the museum.

The PAAM Membership is a vibrant community of over 1,800 individuals. Whether you’re an artist or you simply love the arts, a PAAM Membership opens the door to programs and events that enrich and inspire.

The Tides of Provincetown:

Pivotal Years in America’s Oldest Continuous Art Colony (1899-2011)
Most comprehensive survey of America’s oldest art colony ever presented
July 15-Oct. 16, 2011

Opening Reception: Sunday, July 17, 2011, 2-3:30 p.m.

New Britain, Connecticut: The New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) presents The Tides of Provincetown: Pivotal Years in America’s Oldest Continuous Art Colony (1899-2011) July 15, 2011 through Oct. 16, 2011 in the Museum’s McKernan Gallery.

The Tides of Provincetown will focus on Provincetown’s legacy as an art colony (in 1916, the Boston Globe declared it the “Biggest Art Colony in the World”) and will cover over 100 artists and as many artworks from Charles W. Hawthorne’s founding of the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899-and, thereby, the colony itself-to the present day. This will be the largest and most comprehensive examination of the art colony ever completed as the last Provincetown survey (exhibited over 40 years ago) ended with artwork from the 1970s.

The exhibition will be divided into eight sections that focus on various key years and events in the art colony and highlight Provincetown’s importance in America’s art history.

They are:
1899 Charles W. Hawthorne founds the Cape Cod School of Art
1914-27 The Provincetown Art Association and the “Modernist Split”
1927-31 Modernist breakthroughs, featuring Blanche Lazzell, Ross Moffett, and the “Early Moderns”
1935-66 Hans Hofmann establishes his school and inspires generations of students
1950s Academic and Impressionist trends during the rise of Abstract Expressionism
1958-74 The Tirca Karlis Gallery brings “big name” artists to Provincetown
1968-98 Artists take action to restore the colony to its former glory
1999-2011 The Provincetown art colony today

Artists have been selected based on their contribution to the Provincetown art colony as well as their influence beyond Cape Cod. Just as the focus is on the key moments in Provincetown’s history, so the exhibition will highlight artists who played a pivotal role in the colony and were the important figures and artistic forces. Furthermore, their presence in Provincetown as well as their influence on other artists through schools, mentorships, and/or pure aesthetic power of their artwork are examined.

While many of the artists worked or lived in Provincetown for years-such as Milton Avery, Charles W. Hawthorne, Henry Hensche, Hans Hofmann, Blanche Lazzell, Robert Motherwell, and E. Ambrose Webster-others “passed through” the art colony. We aim to show that many of the great artists of the twentieth century-including Stuart Davis, Willem de Kooning, Charles Demuth, Red Grooms, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol-were inspired by Provincetown, even if they were only there for a short period of time.

Paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and photographs will be loaned from a variety of national museums, as well as from Provincetown galleries and private collections both on Cape Cod and across the country. The NBMAA is fortunate to have an extensive collection of Provincetown art as part of its permanent collection and will feature highlights by William Baziotes, Childe Hassam, Lee Krasner and many more.

It is fitting that the New Britain Museum of American Art, acknowledged as the first museum in the world dedicated solely to the collection and exhibition of American art, brings this study of America’s oldest continuous art colony to the public. Provincetown played a pivotal role in the development of nearly every major American art movement in the last century, especially Impressionism, Modernism, and Abstract Expressionism. It is the NBMAA’s goal to demonstrate how the art colony has been a crucial locus of the advancement of American art, and continues to fulfill this role today.

A robust schedule of related programming (see below) has been planned, including a symposium, Evening of Learning, lectures and films. Studio classes will also focus on Provincetown, as will merchandise available in the Museum Shop.

A fully illustrated, 176 page catalogue will be produced in conjunction with this exhibition. As with the exhibition, the catalogue will also be divided into eight sections that focus on the development of the art colony from 1899 to the present day. The eleven contributors include directors of Cape Cod museums, national authorities on the featured artists, and major art historians of the Provincetown art colony.

The Tides of Provincetown: Pivotal Years in America’s Oldest Continuous Art Colony (1899-2011) is presented with the generous support of:
The Bailey Family Fund for Special Exhibitions
The C.S. Bird Foundation
The Alice Osborne Bristol Fund
The Dedalus Foundation, Inc.
The Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust
The exhibition will travel from New Britain to the following three venues:

Wichita Art Museum: Feb. 5-Apr. 29, 2012
